As in previous years the "Mt Pleasant Open" launched a new badminton season, although there was a poor entry due to committee organisational difficulties, the event still went ahead with great enthusiasm. Special thanks must go to Noel Prendergast, Siobhan Grehan and Joy Acheson who at a weeks notice stepped in and organised the event that ran so smoothly over the two days.

The inaugural Adult Summer Badminton Bonanza took place on Saturday 28th July ’07 in our Terenure Centre. “A Badminton Tournament in July” was a great success with over 70 adults travelling from Cork, Wicklow, Kildare, Limerick, Dublin and even 2 competitors made the journey from Wimbledon and France.

Breda Connolly presented the five players who are representing Ireland in the Shanghai Special Olympic's '07, with a cert and Racket bag (Full Of Goodies) and Martyn Evans also gave each of the players a racket.Breda wished them all the best in the Olympics and also thanked all the Coaches Unpires and helpers who helped this team get ready for the Games which is on from the 2nd to 11th October 2007. Jens Eriksson, from Stockhlm, has been travelling around Ireland with Brenda Barry (Badminton Ireland) giving coaching sessions under the "Women In Sport" initiative. Jens who is 35 years old is playing top class badminton for Fyrusfyadern in Sweden and is currently the Swedish Under 15 Coach.

The 2007 Badminton Leinster Championship of the Community Games was held in Carlow last Saturday, 7th July. The event got off to an inauspicious start when, firstly, one the semi-finalists teams, Stamullen parish from Co Meath, were eliminated as they were unable to field a full team of registered players and, secondly, it transpired that the semi-finals and final would be played according to the old scoring rules of badminton. This came as no small surprise to the teams who had played their qualifying games to date based on the new scoring rules.

The Special Olympics Irish team who are playing in the World Summer Games in Shanghai in October were visited at their training session on Sat 23rd June in DCU by Scott Evans. They were delighted to meet him and thrilled when he played Doubles and Mixed games with them for over an hour! He was very kind to call in and play with us while at home in Ireland!
