The finale of the Dublin & District league season finished on Saturday
24th of April following a three day meet. Over 30 finals were “battled
out on court” for the ultimate prize. Each evening the Baldoyle Centre
was packed to the rafters with over 400 people, players, family &
supporters doing the Mexican wave for their club.
While all Matches were keenly contested on each night they are some notable
ones to mention.
In the Ladies, Division 3, Nomads pipped KADCA by just 3 points, and in
Division 8, PSLC beat Baldoyle by only 11 points,
In the Men's, in Division 1 , Mt. Pleasant beat Ailesbury by just the 1 set,
while in Division 4, Lucan overcame PSLC by 2 sets.
The Mixed events had 2 inter-club Finals, in Division 2, Pembroke's mixed
teams 1 and 2 meet once more and the selectors were proven right with
Pembroke 1 winning. However this was not the case of Division 1 where Mt
Pleasent's top two mixed clashed with Mt Pleasent 2 coming out on top. This
was by no small measure and perhaps down to the inclusion of a "suprise" sub
Chloe Magee for the Mt Pleasant 2 team.
It was a extra treat for all present at these Dublin & District Finals to
have Ireland top female and Olympian competing in a Club Tournament.
The whole event was testament to "Club" Badminton, and while there was
obviously a difference in standard across Division 1 to 10, there was no
difference in the effort and commitment of players competing at and within
their own levels.
Many thanks must go to the Leagues & Cup Committee, Joe, Dave, Avril,
Geraldine, Anne and Alan for all their hard work they do to make this
a great success, and just remember these guys are just volunteers.
Our out going President Breda Connolly with her side kick Vice
President Mary Dinan thanked all the competitors, the sponsors “Victor
Sport”, Umpires and of course Jean Denihan and her staff at the
Baldoyle complex.
The Leagues & Cup committee presented both Presidents with lovely flowers for all their hard work over the years and also made a small presentation to Clare Flood for her contribution to "Club" Badminton before she jets off to Cyprus.
