U14 Dublin Schools Finals in Our Terenure Badminton Centre 25-2-10
Badminton minors on court...... Sancta Marie Winners...
The last of this years Dublin schools finals were played in the Terenure Centre. It was the turn of the U14 boys and girls to represent their school and play their best badminton and to try and qualify for the Leinster U14 School Finals scheduled for next Tuesday the 2nd March in our Baldoyle Centre.
A total of twelve schools booked their place on the Dublin finals day and there were three divisions. In the Boys Div: 1 Knocklyons St Colmcille’s won out on the day by beating northsiders St Fintans 4-2. In the Div: 2 It was southsiders Terenure College who took on Skerries CC. This was an absolute cracker of a match with both schools 3-3 at the close and it went right back to points count back where on this outing Terenure College narrowly took the title by one point(148-147) . In the Div: 3 Stillorgans St Benildus took on Churchtown’s De La Salle. With De La Salle boys taking the two opening singles matches ,St Benildus regrouped and took the next four matches and went on to win the title, this was a hard battle as three of the six matches went very close with the winners score lines of 30-29. St Benildus won 4-2.
In the Girls Div 1: Maryfield Drumcondra took on Terenure’s Our Lady’s in the final. Maryfield had too much firepower in their team, as they took the title 5-1.Another thriller ensued in the Div: 2 sections Mt Sackville took on Loreto girls from Balbriggan. This was a very close encounter and that’s why although a student might be loosing a match, you must fight for every point as in this match the score line ended up 3-3 and it went back to count back and on this challenge Mt Sackville took the title (161-140). The final match of the day a Div 3 match between Santa Maria and Gormanston College. Sancta Marie girls took the title 4-2.
In both the boys and girls section, in Div 1&2 both finalist will battle on court again out in the Leinster Finals next Tuesday for a place in the All Ireland Schools finals on 24th March 2010 in Gormanston College. Only the winners of the Div 3 section will play in the “Leinsters” next Tuesdays also.
Thanks must go to Helen Johnston and Paddy Bird for running the days matches and to all the schools teachers and parents who took time out to support the afternoon’s finals. I would like to thank Marie and Siobhan in the office for supplying the much needed light refreshments.
