U13 Celtic Challenge on the 13th & 14th February 2010 "Results" in The Terenure Centre
Leinster U13's finish up 3rd in Celtic Challenge.........
U13 Celtic Challenge in the Terenure Centre 13/14 Feb, 2010
While the Irish rugby team were battling against France in Paris on Saturday, Leinsters U13 team rose to the challenge of representing their province in the annual Celtic Challenge tournament which was a feast of badminton matches against travelling teams Wales, Lothian (Scot) and Ulster.
The highest honour for any juvenile badminton player or even any sportsperson is to be chosen to represent their province and for those twelve chosen U13 players this will be a great memory to relish throughout their badminton career. The atmosphere in the centre was absolutely electric. 4 teams battled for the ultimate prize and forty eight U13 badminton stars of the future plied their skills on court with help & advice from their respective coaches and mangers. They had major support of their parents, grandparents and friends. And I am very sure they were proud of their little stars playing to the best of their ability.
The two day event went right down to the final match on the Sunday between last year winners Ulster v Wales. The score was 7-7 going into the last mixed match. With all eyes on court No.2 the Welsh pairing took the opening hard fought set 21-18. It was a huge responsibility on these four super U13 players as the next set would and was the crucial decider as Wales once again won the set and the cup 21-14, but the young Ulster pairing and the team can hold their head up high as it was a great finale to a great weekend for the sport of badminton.
This was the fourth time Wales had taken the cup, previous wins were ‘93, 2005, 2006. Leinster has not won the title at this age group since ‘96 & ‘97; The Leinster coach Lucy Corcoran was on that Leinster team back in those winning days so she has a wealth of experience. Her assistant was to be Donal Mangan but was unavailable due to a knee injury but was replaced by the very talented coach, Chris Fusco. Leinster finished up in the third position and some of the scores belie the actual matches as there were some fabulous three setters that just went against Leinster. The final placing were winners Wales, 2nd Ulster, 3rd Leinster and 4th Lothian.
On behalf of the Leinster Branch, I would like to thank YAC’s chairman David Hogan and his team of helpers particularly the Leinster Team Manager Marion Rooney, without them this would not have been such a great success. I would also like to thank the referee’s over the weekend Mary Gannon and Clare Flood and to all those players’ parents who hosted some of the travelling teams and not forgetting BI’s Cheryl Evans who assisted us in organising the Olympic Bus that was a much needed mode of transport throughout the weekend.
