Breda was joined by TD Chris Andrews, who was there on behalf of the Minister of Sport Martin Cullen. Chris said he was delighted to be part of Badminton history in congratulating Scott on being the first ever male to represent Ireland in Badminton in the Olympics’. He also went on to mention our one and only previous Olympian Sonya McGinn (Sydney 2000) and also congratulated Chloe Magee (Raphoe Donegal) who also is keeping the flag flying for the girls as she too is playing in Beijing this August.
Scott made a super speech thanking first of all his parents Cheryl and Martyn and his brother Lee for all their support in good times and bad times, all through his long preparation for the Olympics. He was delighted to be surrounded by so many friend’s and family. He also thanked Pat Marron who spotted his talent at an early age and coached him prior to moving away to Denmark. Scott also thanked his Dublin Club Ailesbury B.C. for taking him in at the tender age of 13.
Bernie Chubb, president of Ailebury B.C. presented Scott with a clock for his achievement and the club secretary Joe Ledwidge presented him with a Honorary Life Membership to Ailebury B.C. which is one of the oldest badminton clubs in Europe.
Martyn Evans thanked the organisers Breda, Fearghal Kearney (MC) and Marie Flemming and also thanked everybody for giving Scott and Cormac all the support from Leinster.
On a personal note I would like to wish Scott, Martyn and Cheryl all the Best on their journey to Beijing and to enjoy what was once a Dream but now is Reality.
