There were twelve titles up for grabs, Leinster narrowly won 5 titles, followed by Ulster taking 4 titles, Munster made it a pair and Connacht snatched the one title.
In the top U19 flight division 1, both in the boys and girls section ,Ulster walked away with the honours.Ballyclare’s High(A) boys of Andrew & Simon Shannon, Philip Ross and Lyle McFarland were always in control, likewise Wallace High girls of Emma Callow,Hannagh Orr,Pipa Taggart and Katherine McGladdery had their final match against Dublin’s Our Lady’s Terenure girls, although some of the games were very tight, Wallace High won the match and the title 5-1 with Fiounalla O’Gorman picking up the only game for the Dublin girls. The tables were turned in division 2 of the same age group with Leinster schools, Terenure College boys Daniel Sinnott, John Halligan, Ronan Mc Donagh and Ciaran Rogers winning a convincing title. Likewise almost local girls Ashleigh Coyne,Ann Mc Cartney,Jane Conaughton and Sara Gorham of St Vincent Dundalk made no mistakes this year and won their title as they were runner up last year in the same age group.
At the Under 16 age group, Friends Lisburn of Ulster made it a double win by taking home both the boys and girls titles in the division one section. That’s no surprise as Brice Bailey, Joe Murphy, Stuart Lightbody are currently on Ulster squads and the slightly younger Ruaraidh Sim,Ruth Roddis,Rachel Orr, Caroline Black, and Kirsty Walker who will represent Ireland in next months U15 Quadrangular in Scotland.
Once again Leinster won the division two boys sections, with Wesley College Gramme Barett, Sam Banks, Colin Farrell and Karl Roe topping the group. Munster’s Ursuline Convent Thurles took their title of the afternoon by beating the Wesley girls to claim a prize, well done to Claire Hughes, Hanah Tobin, Mealbh Brodick ad Edwina McGrath.
The final group was the U14’s, Summerhill’s Colleges (Sligo) won Connacht’s only trophy of the afternoon, they beat St Colmcilles (Dublin) in the boy’s division one, no surprise as Irelands Jonathon Dolan lead out fellow students Conor Scanlon,Conor Caheny and Danny Keown to take home a trophy to Sligo. Still in the boys section,Terenure College claimed their second piece of silverware of the afternoon by winning the U14 division two section,”Nure’s” Mark Lavelle,Robbie Neil, Jack Lawler and Colin Burke were the hero’s of the day.
Finally in the girls U14’s the match of the afternoon was between Our Lady’s Terenure and Ulster’s Coleraine High. Coleraine High got off to a great lead by winning the first two games of singles although their 2nd game was narrowly lost Our Lady’s Aoife Keyes 30-29. Captain Jessica Moran rallied around her team mates Emma Frost, Danielle Neil and Aoife and they played their best badminton of the afternoon and went on to tie the match 3-3 in games and it went back to counting points fortunately Our Lady’s won the title 150-149 pts, could it have been closer, hard luck Coleraine. In division 2 Munster girls Helen Moore, Lisa Howard, Vicky Weathers and Niamh O Connor brought home an All Ireland trophy to their School Colaiste Treasa.
Well done to the Badminton Ireland organiser for a well run tournament, and as Craig Casey (BI President) said “All Matches were played with great spirit and gamesmanship a credit to all the students, teachers and schools”
The Award for "Best presented School" went to St Vincent's Dundalk
