U/14 Dublin Schools Finals

The last Dublin School Finals of the season was held in the Terenure Badminton Centre on Thursday 28th Feb ’08...

Twelve U14 school teams travelled to Terenue to compete for a place in the Leinster School Finals which take place in The Baldoyle Centre next Tuesday 4th March ’08. Both winner and runner up of division 1 & 2 qualify and the winners only of division 3 will get a day off school next Tuesday.

In the girls Division 1, Our Lady’s Terenure, Emma Frost, Aoife Keyes, Daniella Neill and Jesssica Moran had a very close fought match against Mt Sackville’s Cianna Diskin, Eilish O’Connell, Jill O Farrell and Laura Peters. With the score 3-3 points were counted and Our Lady’s this time won on points 151-133 who knows what might happen if they get to meet again at the Leinster Finals.

St Colmcille’s girls, Maria Mc Grath, Emma Doherty, Emma Cooney and Kerrie Griffin came up against a weakened Wesley College girls team as some of the team were playing a schools hockey match, but Temi Ogunjemi, Laura McKay, Cher McCrave and Esther Glenfield battled hard on court but sadly they lost to St Colmcille’s 6-0, not to worry both teams might get to dual again next week.

The Girls Div 3 final was between the very experienced Sutton Park girls and, new to the school finals, High School. Sutton Parks, Nicola Hurley, Clodagh Gale, Aisling Kinsella and Niamh Lowley had a little too much experience for the "High" girls Emma Lucas, Tess Haines, Hannah Ridgeway and Caoimhe Cassidy and went on to book a place in the Leinster Finals by winning 5-1.

Division 1’s St Colmcille’s Boys Mark White, Ian Patterson, Darren Leonard and David Neylon had some very close scores in their matches but came out clear winners with a 6-0 win over Sutton Park’s Mathew Taylor, Michael Palminteri, Jamie Doyle and Conor Scully they both qualify for Leinster finals.

The final of the afternoon was the boys Division 2 match between Terenure (A) and Gormanstons College. Terenure gladiators Colin Burke, Robbie Neill, Mark Lavelle and Jack Lawlor played some of their best badminton but the score ended up 3-3 and on points 157-157. Gormanstons College team consisted of Shane Curran, Shane Storey, Cathal McEnaney, Conor Grimes. These teams might meet again in the Leinster Finals on 4th March.

Last final of the afternoon was between Terenure (B) and Gonzaga. Athough Gonzaga took the opening game Terenure rallied round and took the next 4 games giving them the match, but Gonzaga took the final game leaving this final score 4-2 to the Terenure boys Conor McClean, Zach Parkinson, Andrew Mooney and Conor O Loughnan. Gonzaga’s coach Amanda Dunlop must be proud of her team, Sean O Rourke, Philip Cullen, Tom O Higgins and Daniel Mc Nicholas as they played a good and sporty match.

Thanks must go to organisers Helen Johnston, Margaret Cox, Mary Gannon and Paddy Bird and I must thank the girls in the office for organising the tea and biscuits for the afternoon
