Leinster U15 Open 19.01.08

There was a big entry in this tournament particularly in the boy’s event, but that is no surprise as the hall was awash with selectors, managers and coaches who were working hard and taking notes to help them make their team selection for the forthcoming Irish U/15 Quad, U/15 Celtic Challenge (Leinster) and Nothingham (Leinster) trips away.

Sligo’s Jonathon Dolan walked away with two titles, he took his first title in the mixed final, Caroline Black and Jonathon played against his doubles partner Joshua Magee and Ballyclare’s Laura Shannon. Dolan and Black won it in 2 sets 21-7, 21-17.

Jonathon’s next dual was against his old Dublin’s rival Adam Jermyn in the boys singles final. Adam took the opening set 21-17. But Jonathon who is training very hard to produce good badminton dug deep and took the 2nd set 21-19. In the final set Adam took an 11-3 lead, but once again the very young Dolan fought hard for every point to claw the score back and went on to take the 3rd set 21-16 and the title.

The Girls Singles Final was an all Lisburn affair, with doubles partners Ruth Roddis taking on Caroline Black. Although the 1st set was a feisty challenge by both players Roddis took the opener 21-18,Black fought back in the 2nd set  but Roddis had a little too much experience and went on to take the title 21-12. Both girls teamed  up to take on fellow Northern duo Rachael Orr and Kirsty Walker in the girl’s doubles final.Roddis and Black were a little too strong a combination and went on take their 2nd title each 21-18,21-13.

Adam Jermyn had a second chance of a title in the boys doubles final. He teamed up with fellow Terenure School mate Rory Curry and their opponents were the very talented Leinster players of David Marron and Graham Doyle. Doyle and Marron took the opener too easily 21-14, but Jermyn and Curry were in hot pursuit in the middle set and narrowly won it 21-19. This left the Terenure Centre with a great final set decider to finish off a great days Tournament. The four Dublin boys played some great rallies through the final set, but Jermyn and Curry stole the title in the 3rd 21-18.

Special thanks must go to “Hogans” hero’s who worked hard in the office to run a very good tournament, also “Thanks” to all the Umpires who umpired all the matches scheduled throughout the day.
