Dublin U19 Schools Finals Report

Twelve school badminton teams battled their way across the city centre in the dreadful weather to the Terenure Badminton Centre to play in the Dublin U/19 Schools Finals. The finals were divided into 3 divisions of boys and girls sections.

In the boys section, division 1, the up and coming badminton school St Colmcille’s took on the well established Wesley boys. Stephen Neary opened the Colmcille’s account by beating Wesley’s Steven Horsfall, but Wesley’s Stephen Belton hit back as he beat Alan Fanning in a close game 30-28. St Colmcille’s went ahead again as Eoin Leonard beat the other Belton twin Ian also in a close game 30-24. In the last singles decider David Sullivan drew the match 2-2 by beating Colmcille’s Karl Fitzharris, so this left the Boys doubles to be a tense affair. Although both boys doubles was a very close encounter St Colmcilles won both games and the Dublin Title, both of these schools will meet again in the Leinster Finals on Tuesday 22nd January in our Baldoyle centre.

In the same division, the two girl’s schools of Our Lady’s Terenue and Holy Faith Glasinevin have met each other on several outings before. Our Lady’s Kirsty Kelly took the opening game by beating fellow Leinster squad player Ciara Brady (Holy Faith Glasinevin). Ciara Ni Mharnain (Our Lady’s) also on the Leinster squad beat Holy Faith’s Graine Murray, and then Our Lady’s went 3 love up with Finonola O Gorman (Our Lady’s) winning the 3rd singles spot against Aisling Ryan (HF). Although Our Lady’s School had a comfortable lead, Holy Faith did not give up and they took a very close last singles match between Aoife Murray(HF) and Laura Reynolds(OL), this went down to the wire with Holy Faith clinching it 30-29.  With the match 3-1 going into the doubles. Holy Faith won both the doubles leaving the score 3-3 but Our Lady’s won out on the day by 30 points , both these schools will meet again in the Leinster School final again next Tuesday.

Gormanton College had a team in both Division 2 and 3 of the boys section.  In Division 2 Gormanton “A” came up against Terenure’s “A”. This match also went down to the wire, with Arbsiam Skuryat,Seon Jeon Jun,John Clarke, and Nick McGongle of Gormanton College were unfortunate to loose against Terenure’s,Daniel Sinnott,John Halligan,Ronan McDonagh and Ciaran Rogers. The Match was 3-3 and Terenure won on points. Both these teams get a chance to compete again next Tuesday.

Gormanton “C” had a little more luck in their final as they came up against Ard Scoil Ris in the Division 3 .Ard Scoils, Christopher Parkes, Stephen Duffy, Daragh Condon and Paul Mc Donnell fought hard in each game but Gormanton’s Philip Napiorkowski, Alan Rigney, Sean Mulhall, and Ting Hao were too strong and went on to win the match 4-2. Only Gormanton will make their way to Leinster finals on Tuesday.

Once again there was a 3 all match on finals day. This was in the girls Division 2 final, were Mt Sackville came up against Sutton Park. Sutton Park’s, Marianne Ryan, Lara Taylor, Shireen Bhujwalla and Julie Thornhill were very unfortunate to loose as there was only 4 points between the two schools and Mt Sackville’s Sarah Dolan, Orla Fox, Karen Carty and Sinead walked away with today’s prize but they both might get a chance to meet again next Tuesday as both qualified for the Leinster finals.

Finally Mt Sackville had a second team in the Division 3 final, they came up against Wesley College’s Niamh Richardson, Shola Ogundimk, Hannah Clark, Carla Roberts. But the Mt Sackville ran out winners on the day 5-1 and qualify to go to Baldoyle next Tuesday. Girls Sally Wong, Elsa Hogan O’ Reagan, Rachael Manning and Claire Melia has earned themselves another day off school next Tuesday.

I would like to thank Paddy Bird and Mary Gannon from the YAC’s for their help on the day. Also I would like to “thank” all the teachers and parents who travelled with the students and of course a special “thanks” to the office staff who organised the tea, coffee and biscuits for adults in attendance.
