Dublin Open 2nd Nov '07 U11's

At the youngest U/11 age-group, there were several stories to be told. Mark Gannon who is the 3rd generation of Gannon’s to play badminton, with his Dad “Niall” who played for Ireland and has a doubles National title, whilst his grandparents Christy and Mary (Coach) can still be seen at many a tournament around the country, ps.Uncle David can hit a shuttle or two I think!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark got into 2 finals, he lost the singles to Donal O’ Leary from Louth, but Mark regrouped and went on to win the boys doubles with his partner Stephen Moran were they piped Paul Reynolds and Sam Makay in the round robin event.

Also in the U/11 group was Kate Frost, who also comes from good stock in Leinster badminton history. Kate’s mum Lorraine Halpin played for Leinster and Kate’s granddad “Tommy” was a good singles player in his day. Kate and her partner Caroline Macken were narrowly beaten by Rachal Darragh( niece of Chloe Magee) and Moya Ryan in their round robin league.

Finally I would like to thank Elizabeth Mangan who has ran this tournament very successfully for over 12 years and now is handing over the reigns( interviews on going). Leinster Branch would like to wish Elizabeth all the best, but she has promised she will always be around for advice and help at anytime.

Thanks also to Fr Billy Langan, Terenure Junior Badminton Club, and all the Mum’s who helped over the mid- term with the catering.
