"Wombles come to Dublin"

Fourteen Wimbledon badminton players lead by Jenny Lacey travelled to Dublin last weekend to play in an invitational team tournament organised by Siobhan Grehan of Mount Pleasant. In July this year, a number of Siobhan’s colleague’s travelled to Surrey to play in a similar tournament, so this was the return visit.

On Saturday 6th Oct, Terenure Badminton Centre was the venue for 10 teams to play in a number of divisions to battle out many matches to see who would play in Sunday’s final.

Mt Pleasant Badminton Club was the venue for the vet’s tournament, where a team lead by Amanda Mullery with Sian Williams, Joe Wright and Roy Watkins narrowly beat (by 7 Pts) Ita Marron, Imelda Carroll, Damien Mooney and Nelson McDowell in the final. On Saturday evening a good night was had by all with a Bar B Q back in the Raneleigh Club.

Sunday saw the semi-final and final in the Terenure Centre when Siobhan teamed up with Mark Topping, Lincoln Nelson and Georgina Ward (Team Dream Topping) to win the final by defeating the Cobbled Together team of Mark & Dawn Cobbe , Lorraine Hill and Ross Mc Nevin. This hopefully will become an annual event!
