Wexford Team Triumph in Community Games Leinster Championship

The 2007 Badminton Leinster Championship of the Community Games was held in Carlow last Saturday, 7th July.  The event got off to an inauspicious start when, firstly, one the semi-finalists teams, Stamullen parish from Co Meath, were eliminated as they were unable to field a full team of registered players and, secondly, it transpired that the semi-finals and final would be played according to the old scoring rules of badminton.  This came as no small surprise to the teams who had played their qualifying games to date based on the new scoring rules.

The result was that the Wexford team, Taghmon, were straight into the final and an appeal for referees who could remember the old scoring rules!

The other semi-final featured St Jude’s parish from Dublin and Delvin parish from Co Westmeath.  It proved to be an unequal contest with St. Jude’s winning through in reasonably comfortable fashion.

The scene was then set for the final between Taghmon and St. Judes, and what a contest it proved to be, with victory hanging on the last game of the last Mixed Doubles.

The first of five games, boy’s doubles, marked a win for St Jude’s – Cian McDonagh and Conor Moloney taking on Andy McGrath and Thomas Furlong.

In the girls’ doubles, the Wexford girls, Clodagh Kent and Ciara Dunne, proved too strong for Emma Frost and Niamh Cox.

The first mixed doubles saw another win for Taghmon – Kate O’Gorman and Conor O’Keefe winning out over Niall Reynolds and Aoife Keyes.

St Jude’s fought back in the second mixed doubles with Cian McDonagh and Niamh Cox beating Clodagh Kent and James Whitney.

The sides were therefore level going into the final match between St Jude’s Emma Frost and Conor Moloney and Taghmon’s Andy McGrath and Ciara Dunne.  The best of three sets to 15 would clinch the Leinster Championship.

St Jude’s won the first set.  Then Taghmon fought back to win the second.  Everything hinged on the third set.  To use an overworked cliché, the tension was palpable.  In the end, it was Wexford who triumphed to cheers of joy from team and supporters.  St. Jude’s however, can console themselves that they took on, and almost beat, the reigning national champions, Taghmon.

Taghmon now go on to fly the flag for Leinster at the National Community Games in Mosney in August. We wish them the best of luck.
