Although Watt took off with a 9-1 lead, Evans slowly went into overdrive and slowly brought back the score to all and went on to win the opening set 21-11. Evans took hold of the second set and no matter what Watt tried, with all his experience, Evans had an answer. Evans took the second set and his second singles title 21-4. Scott Evans lines himself up for the Austrian & Croatia Opens and the All England’s in the comings weeks.
In the ladies singles final the number 1 & 2 seeds met in the final. Swedish based Chloe Magee (from Raphoe, Donegal) took on Lisburns Lisa Lynas. Although there were great rallies in the 1st set, Magee began to creep away and took the opener 21-17, the Lisburn girl dug in the 2nd set but Magee showed her fitness and took the 2nd set 21-12. This was Magee's first National singles title.
Leading up to the Men’s Doubles final Danial and Sam Magee (Raphoe, Donegal) created a great surprise by beating the no.1 seeds of Donie O Halloran and Mark Topping in the semifinals 21-13, 21-17. With the Donegal boys riding high they then took on X Irish Team pairing of Eugene Mc Kenna and Graham Henderson (Lisburn) in the final. The Magee brothers had too much youth on their side and went on to take their 1st national doubles title 21-14, 21-14.
Chloe Magee was back out on court again this time in the ladies doubles final with Karen Bing. The defending champions were up against Lisburn pair of Dona Scott and Lisa Lynas. Magee and Bing, who have just returned from the Swedish Open were they were beaten semifinalist, were too strong for the northern pair and went on to win their 2nd doubles national title 21-10, 21-14.
The final match of the afternoon was the mixed final with the No.1 seeds Donie O Halloran and Karen Bing barely scraping through to the final as they narrowly beat Chloe Magee and her brother Sam in the Semifinal 21-14,16-21,23-21. O Halloran and Bing went on to win the mixed title and their 2nd nationals by beating the northern pair of Lisa Lynas and Eugene Mc Kenna. 21-12,21-17
The story of the Nationals is although Scott Evans (19yrs) is still Irelands No.1, the Magee Family of Chloe (18yrs)Danial (22yrs) and Sam (17yrs) will all help to make the Irish Badminton team feature in Europe and Beijing in 2008.
